Special Road Use Permits for Heavy Vehicles
Individual Vehicles: Any vehicle weighing over 34,000 pounds, or over 10,000 pounds per axle, must obtain a Special Road Use Permit to operate on roads maintained by Grimes County (effective February 1st, 2025). Instructions are included in the application. If a vehicle has been issued a permit by the state, there is no fee for a Grimes County permit. All other requirements still apply.
Special Road Use Permit Vehicle Application
Private-Development Projects on County Roads: Any private operation, development, or project requiring heavy trucks to operate on County-maintained roads must obtain a Special Road Use Project Permit if:
1) the project requires 10+ heavy vehicle passes per day, and/or
2) the project lasts longer than 2 weeks.
A pre-inspection, post-inspection, and periodic inspections during the project are required. The frequency of inspections will be determined by Grimes County. Any damage to a County Road caused by a private development project is the responsibility of the development to repair. Any permanent business or delivery operation by a private development resulting in constant heavy truck traffic on a County Road may trigger a requirement for the entity to reconstruct or perpetually maintain the County Road.
Special Road Use Permit - Project Application
Grimes County roads are built for light residential and agricultural use. The impact of a heavy truck on a County Road can equal the impact of decades of residential vehicle traffic. Reconstructing roads to support heavy truck traffic, and/or conducting maintenance work to repair damage from heavy vehicle traffic, is incredibly costly to Grimes County taxpayers. Please be considerate of the shared-use nature of County Roads when planning construction, business operations, or deliveries.
